Our Story

It all began when Rachel Huggins and Corrina Hewat joined forces, and something magical was born. Combining their diverse backgrounds and over 50 years of creative experience, they crafted a project that would become truly unique and inspiring.

How our Dragon Stories began.

The idea for Moon Dragon began as a simple bedtime story, shared between the company Founder, Rachel, and her daughter Beatrice.

The story originated as adventures between Beetle, played by Beatrice and her Dragon friend, Bertie, voiced by Rachel.

When The Pleasance approached Rachel in 2019 to create a children’s production, it seemed only fitting to bring a story that was so close to her heart to life.

And naturally, it felt right to include the person who inspired it all - Beatrice.

Moon Dragon

Moon Dragon soon grew into a magical show featuring an enormous puppet and all original songs, written alongside Corrina Hewat. Moon Dragon captivated audiences and received glowing reviews, after a sell out season at Edinburgh Festival Fringe. From this, Dragon Song Productions was brought to life.

In December 2019, Celtic Connections invited Dragon Song Productions to bring Moon Dragon to the Glasgow Festival in January 2020, marking their first-ever children’s production.

Just as momentum was building, the pandemic of 2020-2021 paused live performances. However, the team persevered and returned with a triumphant, sold-out run at Christmas 2021, proving their resilience and commitment to keeping the Dragon magic alive.

Sea Dragon

Sea Dragon, the company’s second production, debuted in December 2022. Sea Dragon was featured at Celtic Connections in January 2023, followed by a run at The Pleasance during the Edinburgh Fringe 2023.

The production received overwhelmingly positive feedback, incorporating multigenerational elements and relaxed performances, further cementing Dragon Song Productions’ place in children’s theatre.

Ice Dragon

Their third show, Ice Dragon, launched in December 2023 and played sold out shows in Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August 2024.

In December 2024, Dragon Song Productions partnered with the Royal Hospital for Children & Young People, supported by Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity.

The Company was invited to perform Ice Dragon in December 2024, as part of the Charity’s Advent Calendar Series. More information on our Community & Charity outreach programs can be found here.

Dragon Song Productions has since organised various interactive book readings, and tailored the show to suit the specific needs of young patients.

Dragon Song Press

In addition to their theatre productions, Dragon Song Productions has expanded into publishing with Dragon Song Press. In July 2023, the company published the first of three books, Kipper the Sea Dragon, which accompanied their show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August 2023 at The Pleasance.

In September 2024, Dragon Song Press launched their second book, Bertie the Moon Dragon with a live interactive reading at Portobello Library in Edinburgh. The event was a success, and featured beloved songs from the Dragon shows, puppets and craft activities.

Author Rachel Huggins is also part of the Scottish Book Trust, and often gives live readings of her two children’s books across Scotland.

Her third book, Inka the Ice Dragon, is set to be published in 2025.

With a clear vision and a passion for creating memorable, immersive experiences, Dragon Song Productions continues to enchant audiences and push the boundaries of children’s theatre.
