Testimonials

“Rachel Huggins has performed at the Pleasance, as part of our Children’s Programme, since 2009. Her fully immersive, inventive, imaginative and beautifully crafted shows have entertained babies, toddlers and their families alike, have had 5★ reviews and sold out every year.

Many parents are unsure of taking their little ones to see a show - worried that they will make too much noise, or be a nuisance - but from the moment they settle into the performance space, Rachel has everyone at ease and enjoying themselves.

Studies have shown that childhood engagement in arts activities improves reading and sound processing skills while reducing behavioural problems, with early engagement giving the greatest benefits.

Rachel’s work with young children is therefore crucial, and her shows have been a massive part of The Pleasance continuing to be THE venue for families at the Festival Fringe.”

“Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity worked with Rachel Huggins who led bedside storytelling around the wards of the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People, it was a magical experience.

One of the most memorable moments was with a child who had been struggling with bedtime and was finding it difficult to settle in the hospital ward. When we first arrived the family were unsure if their child would engage. As Rachel began the session, the dragon puppet and light-up book immediately captured the child's attention. It was amazing to see him gradually relax and become fully engaged in the story.

By the end of the session, he was completely at ease and ready to drift off to sleep. The evening was not just about storytelling; it was about creating an atmosphere of comfort and wonder that helped a child feel safe and soothed in a difficult time.

Rachel's talent for engaging children and making them feel at ease is well suited to the unique environment of a children's hospital, the event made a real difference in the lives of the families involved.”

Rachel Huggins delivered two events at Portobello library for pre-school children in 2024, a book launch event for her title Bertie the Moon Dragon and an event as part of Portobello Library’s programme marking Book Week Scotland.

Personally, I have found Rachel excellent to work with, she communicates well and demonstrates a clear understanding of libraries role in promoting reading and literacy to young children.

Having hosted two events led by Rachel at Portobello library I have observed that Rachel is a multi-skilled performer, who uses puppetry and crafts to augment her undoubted storytelling skills.

She engages very well with pre-school children and their parents and appears to manage the challenge of delivering events that hold the attention of up 20-30 pre-school children with ease.

I have been very impressed with Rachel’s books, Bertie the Moon Dragon and Kipper the Sea Dragon.  Both stories are well crafted and beautifully illustrated.  In my view they hold a clear appeal for children of 3-5 years.  I am currently working to get both tiles added to Portobello library stock.

I would not hesitate to recommend Rachel to colleagues in libraries and nurseries.  She delivers a high quality experience with skill and flexibility to inspire young children at the start of their reading journey.
